Pakistan Reaffirms Deepening Maritime Cooperation with China under CPEC Framework
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry has reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to expanding maritime cooperation with China, positioning Gwadar as a regional hub for trade and connectivity. The 2025–2029 Maritime Action Plan under CPEC focuses on infrastructure, marine economy, sustainability, and regional integration.
ISLAMABAD – Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, on Wednesday reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to deepening maritime cooperation with China, emphasizing Gwadar’s central role in transforming regional trade and connectivity.
Chairing a meeting on the 2025–2029 Maritime Action Plans, the minister outlined the framework’s priorities, which include strengthening the marine economy, promoting sustainable resource use, advancing scientific research, and ensuring environmental protection under the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
Highlighting Gwadar’s strategic importance, the minister pointed to major infrastructure projects such as the expansion of Gwadar Port, completion of Free Zone Stage II, and fast-tracking of East Bay Expressway Phase II to improve accessibility. He further stressed the integration of the upcoming New Gwadar International Airport with the port to enhance multi-modal connectivity.
The action plan also promotes modernization of port operations through electronic data interchange and smart port technologies, connecting Gwadar with Chinese and global shipping networks. Development of port-related industries, warehousing, and cold storage facilities will enable Gwadar to serve as a key transshipment hub for Afghanistan, Central Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.
Beyond infrastructure, the roadmap encourages scientific, industrial, and tourism collaboration. It envisions joint marine science research centers, CPEC industrial parks for fisheries, shipbuilding, and aquaculture, as well as maritime tourism ventures including cruises and water sports along Balochistan’s scenic coast.
Education and sustainability remain cross-cutting priorities, with academic partnerships and training exchanges between Pakistani and Chinese institutions designed to build skilled manpower in logistics, fisheries, and port operations. The plan also aligns with Belt and Road’s “green energy and ocean” vision to balance economic growth with environmental stewardship.
Reaffirming Pakistan’s strategic commitment, Junaid Chaudhry stated:
“The 2025–2029 Action Plan demonstrates Pakistan’s resolve to build a resilient maritime economy and consolidate our strategic partnership with China, ensuring shared prosperity and stronger maritime presence under the CPEC framework.”
