Chinese firms plan to invest $2.6bn in Balochistan

Chinese companies have announced plans to invest about $2.6 billion in Balochistan’s manufacturing sector and $14 million in the mineral industry, aiming to boost industrial growth and create jobs for local residents. The announcement was made during a meeting between a Chinese investor delegation, including Chang Jiang Industries chairman Zhang Yang, and Senate Deputy Chairman Syedal Khan. The investors also expressed interest in sectors such as agriculture, transport, and tourism over the next five years. Both sides highlighted the potential for stronger Pakistan–China economic cooperation, particularly to support Balochistan’s development.

ISLAMABAD: Chinese companies have announced plans to invest approximately $2.6 billion in Balochistan’s manufacturing sector, along with an additional $14 million earmarked for the province’s mineral industry. The proposed investments are expected to boost industrial activity and create substantial employment opportunities for local residents.

The announcement was made during a meeting held on Tuesday between a Chinese delegation of investors and Senate Deputy Chairman Syedal Khan. The delegation was accompanied by former Balochistan finance minister Amjad Rasheed. Zhang Yang, Chairman of Chang Jiang Industries (SMC-Private) Limited, was among the members of the Chinese team.

During the meeting, the Chinese investors briefed Mr. Syedal Khan on their interest in investing not only in minerals and manufacturing, but also in agriculture, transport, tourism, and other sectors over the next five years. Both sides discussed the potential for increased economic cooperation between Pakistan and China, with a particular focus on opportunities within Balochistan.

Welcoming the delegation, Senate Deputy Chairman Syedal Khan expressed his appreciation for the Chinese investors’ interest in the province. He noted that such investments could play a significant role in the economic development of Balochistan and help generate jobs for its people.

The Chinese delegation emphasized their commitment to exploring various sectors in the province, highlighting the long-term prospects for collaboration and growth. The meeting concluded with both parties expressing optimism about the future of Pakistan-China economic ties, particularly in the context of Balochistan’s development.
