China-Pakistan collaboration: Historic MOU signed to safeguard cultural heritage amid climate change
The first International Forum on Cave Temple Conservation, themed around climate change’s impact on cave temples, was inaugurated in Chongqing Municipality on August 19. The forum focused on the protection of cave carvings, particularly the Dazu Rock Carvings, which were designated a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 1999. The effects of climate change, particularly humidity and wind erosion, were discussed by experts from various countries. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Academy of Dazu Rock Carvings and the Museum of the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Peshawar, aiming to strengthen cooperation in heritage conservation. The need for collaboration between China and Pakistan, both facing similar heritage protection challenges, was emphasized, with practical actions underlining the agreement’s importance. The forum highlighted the significance of safeguarding cultural relics and promoting shared cultural heritage.
