NLC kicks off work on Gilgit-Shandoor Road
The National Logistics Cell (NLC) has begun work on one of Pakistan’s most important road projects, which will serve as an alternative to the strategic Karakoram Highway while also connecting the region’s picturesque valleys. The CPEC standard road will be a game-changer for Pakistan’s burgeoning tourism industry, significantly raising the living standard of the people of Gilgit-Baltistan. The NLC will build a 76-kilometer section of the Gilgit-Shandoor Road in a difficult environment that includes inaccessibility, high altitude, hostile weather, and precipitous mountain formations. NLC has already moved machinery, plant, and equipment, as well as establishing a camp with advanced engineering facilities. Work on the Shandoor end of the project has begun, with the goal of making the region more accessible to tourists during the yearly festival.
National Logistics Cell (NLC) has kicked started work on one of the most important road projects in the northern areas of Pakistan that would serve as alternative to the strategic Karakoram Highway besides linking the pristine valleys in the region.
The CPEC standard road will prove to be a game changer for the growing tourism industry of Pakistan bringing marked improvement in the living standards of the people of Gilgit-Baltistan.
NLC will construct 76 kilometers portionof the Gilgit – Shandoor Road under challenging environment including inaccessibility of the area, high altitude, inhospitable weather conditions and precipitous mountain formations. NLC has already mobilized machinery, plant and equipment besides establishment of camp with requisite facilities of modern engineering. The work has been commenced at the Shandoor end of the project with an aim to facilitate tourists who thronged the area during annual festival.
What makes the project a daunting engineering task is the short weather window to undertake construction work. The threat of rock and landslides looms large during construction work as well as heavy snow and rainfall. Located over 12,500 feet above sea level, the weather opens up for just four months in a year.
The road has been upgraded from provincial to national highway that will bring these remote valleys at par with other developed areas of the Gilgit-Baltistan. Travel time between Gilgit and Shandoor valley will be reduced from 7 hours to just 4 hours only.
