Pakistan opposes sports politicization, says foreign ministry
In an official statement, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry has opposed all forms of politicization of sports. While addressing media, Foreign Ministry spokesman Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said that Pakistan is confident that despite limitations imposed by COVID-19, the Beijing Winter Olympics will offer a spectacular and colorful gala to sports enthusiasts. Ahmad also said that Pakistan hopes all nations will come together in Beijing and offer opportunities to the athletes.
ISLAMABAD, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) — The Pakistani Foreign Ministry said on Friday that Pakistan opposes any form of politicization of sports.
Addressing the weekly media briefing in Islamabad, Foreign Ministry spokesman Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said Pakistan is confident that despite limitations imposed by COVID-19, the Beijing Winter Olympics will offer a spectacular and colorful gala to sports enthusiasts around the world, including in Pakistan.
Expressing best wishes to China for a very successful hosting of the Beijing Winter Olympics, Ahmad said the Olympic games symbolize sportsmanship, team spirit, unity, effort, struggle and maintaining grace in competition whatever the results are.
Olympic spirit espouses fair participation in the events, and like in all previous Olympic events, Pakistan would like to see the Olympic spirit upheld in true sporting fashion, he added.
The spokesman said Pakistan hopes that all nations will come together in Beijing and afford their athletes an opportunity against the best and showcase their skills.
