Pakistan seeks to replicate Shenzhen’s economic success, says PM Shehbaz at Pakistan China Business Conference
At the Pakistan China Business Conference in Shenzhen, Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif highlighted Shenzhen’s transformation from a fishing village to a major economic hub with a GDP of USD 500 billion, emphasizing its rapid development as a model for Pakistan. He praised China’s economic success, attributing it to the solidarity, efforts, and vision of its people and leaders, and noted China’s achievements in combating corruption, poverty, and empowering youth. Sharif urged Pakistani companies to engage with Chinese counterparts in sectors like ICT, EV, and mining, highlighting Pakistan’s vast but underutilized mining potential. He affirmed Pakistan’s commitment to enhancing bilateral ties and ensuring the safety of Chinese nationals in Pakistan.
“Shenzhen’s modernization offers Pakistan lessons to copy and emulate. A few decades ago, Shenzhen was a small fishing village, but today, with a population of 17 million people, it has created a GDP of around USD 500 billion”, Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif said at the Pakistan China Business Conference held today in Shenzhen.
“The Shenzhen speed is remarkable achievement. Going back to Pakistan, it’s enough for us to learn from”, he said.
Going through the history of China, he attributed China’s dynamic economic advancement to the “solidarity” of Chinese people, their “untiring efforts” and “forward-going visons” of the leadership.
He also highlighted China’s achievements in erasing corruption, poverty alleviation, and youth empowerment.
Referring to the ensuing B2B session of the conference, which provides opportunities “of unprecedented scale” for bilateral companies in ICT, EV, solar, textile, steel, agriculture, etc. to explore chances of cooperation, he urged Pakistani companies to sit down with Chinese counterparts and find out how to attract China’s industries to Pakistan.
“Pakistan’s mining sector is worth USD 10 trillion, but for now only USD 30 million is availed. Today is the moment for you to capture”, he said, adding that support will be provided like never before for mutual benefit.
He also extolled China’s commitment to bringing peace to the world. Hailing China’s role as a friend, neighbor, and close partner of Pakistan through thick and thin, he pledged to spare no effort in protecting the lives of Chinese brothers and sisters in Pakistan.
Ambassador of China to Pakistan H.E. Jiang Zaidong, Ambassador of Pakistan to China H.E. Khalil Rahman Hashmi, Pakistani Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Ministers for commerce, national food security and research, finance, planning, development and special initiatives, information and broadcasting, privatization and investment, and Executive Vice Mayor of Shenzhen Tao Yongxin were also present.
