PM Shehbaz to head CCoE on speedy work of energy projects under CPEC

The Cabinet Committee on Energy (CCoE), led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, would place a special emphasis on the prompt implementation of current and upcoming energy projects included in the CPEC. As the committee’s chairman, PM Shehbaz will assess the status and issue directives to ensure the efficient execution of energy projects that are already under way or in the planning stages, particularly projects covered by the CPEC.

ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will head the Cabinet Committee on Energy (CCoE), with special focus on speedy implementation of ongoing and upcoming energy projects falling under the umbrella of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

“In terms of rule 17(2) of the Rules of Business, 1973, the Prime Minister has been pleased to constitute the Cabinet Committee on Energy (CCoE),” said a notification No F 5/4/2022-Com issued here.

According the notification issued by Cabinet Division, Prime Minister of Pakistan will be the chairman of the Committee while it will comprise of Minister for Power, Minister for Finance & Revenue, Minister for Planning, Development & Special Initiatives, Minister for Water Resources, Minister for States & Frontier Regions, Minister for Maritime Affairs and Minister for Board of Investment. Interestingly Minister of State for Petroleum is not a member of the committee but he can attend the meeting through special invitation.

Other officials who can attend the meeting by special invitation include adviser to the Prime Minister on Establishment, Minister of State for Power, Minister of State for Finance & Revenue, Secretary Finance Division, Secretary Power Division, Secretary Petroleum Division, Secretary Law and Justice Division, Chairman NEPRA  and  Chairman OGRA.

The Term of Reference of the committee include, to ensure the smooth implementation of energy projects currently underway or in the pipeline, in particular projects falling under the umbrella of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor, well within timelines stipulated for these projects; Identify and remove bottlenecks in the expeditious implementation of these projects; Identify the flaws and deficiencies of the existing legal and institutional framework governing the energy sector and formulate reform initiatives; Review the current energy policy and remove its weaknesses, formulation of policies/plans on energy conservation and regular/periodical monitoring of such policies/plans; and Conduct inter-ministerial coordination whenever required, but at least once every fortnight.

It is worth to mention here that in the previous government of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf the Federal Minister for Planning was heading the CCoE.
