China gifts Islamabad 21 fire, rescue vehicles worth Rs3 billion

China has gifted Islamabad 21 modern fire and rescue vehicles worth approximately Rs3 billion, in a move aimed at strengthening the capital’s emergency response and firefighting capabilities.

The fleet is expected to replace ageing firefighting vehicles and improve the ability of emergency teams to respond to fires, road accidents and other incidents, with the vehicles due to arrive in Pakistan in September.

The assistance comes days after a fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) hospital killed 14 newborn babies, prompting concerns over fire safety, emergency preparedness and the adequacy of rescue infrastructure.

Among the vehicles being provided is an advanced snorkel fire tender, a specialised firefighting vehicle fitted with an extendable platform that can operate at significant heights.

The vehicle can reportedly reach about 88 metres, allowing rescue teams to access upper floors of high-rise buildings that may be difficult to reach with conventional firefighting equipment.

The newly supplied vehicles are expected to increase the speed and effectiveness of emergency operations once they are deployed in Islamabad.

The fleet is intended to strengthen the capital’s existing firefighting and rescue arrangements, particularly during incidents requiring specialised equipment or access to elevated areas.

The Chinese donation also comes as Islamabad faces a need to modernise its emergency response infrastructure.
